뮤지컬 <R;LINK> The Musical was hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, organized by the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange and produced by Hanyang University (Theatre Major, Dept. of Theatre & Film) in association with Capilano University, First Nations University of Canada, and The University of Saskatchewan.

MEET THE PLAYWRIGHTS

김가람 Kim Ga-ram (Writer/ Director)

The initial concept for the work originated from Kim Ga-ram’s research into the Korean War and the pivotal Battle of Kapyong, where she learned of Canadian soldiers playing ice hockey on the Imjin River. This image inspired use ice hockey as a metaphor to portray the brutality of war while celebrating the enduring youth, dreams, and humanity of the young men who fought. Her directorial vision emphasized cross-cultural unity.

Tyrone Perreault (Writer, Cowessess First Nation)

뮤지컬 <R;LINK> The Musical” marks his debut in theatrical writing. His creative focus was on ensuring a proper representation of Canada’s diverse cultural fabric, including not only English and French-Canadian elements, but crucially, the voices and presence of Indigenous peoples. His experience included his first trip to Korea, where he was deeply moved by visiting the Canadian War Memorial in Kapyong and witnessing Korean elders pay their respects to the fallen soldiers.

MEET THE TRANSLATOR

Sandrine Boudrias (French Translator)

A recent graduate of the CapU Musical Theatre Program, Quebec native Sandrine Boudrias has an intimate and unique understanding of the dramatic text, having originated the role of Lt Tremblay. Her direct insight is invaluable, especially concerning the French-Canadian content—much of which was developed with her—as she navigates the material’s linguistic and cultural nuances. This project prioritizes supporting emerging talents like Sandrine in this key role, which is vital for ensuring the French translation maintains artistic quality, cultural integrity, and co-creation.

Bouche Theatre Collective (BTC) is a Vancouver-based artistic collective co-founded in 2012 by France Perras and Jack Paterson. ABOUT CREATIVE TRANSLATION

Professionally as “Creative Translation.”, Translation in theatre, rather than a word-for-word substitution, the source text is a point of reference to create an equally compelling work in the new language.

With many choices beyond words, the creative translator draws on a wide knowledge of the performing arts and a deep understanding of the target culture. In addition to new rhythms, poetic structures, and metaphors, it’s not uncommon for new scenes, scenarios, and text to be created. It is a uniquely collaborative art; one where the collaborators are the cultures and languages of the original and target population as embodied by the artists involved.

Our Creative Translation team is gathered from leading theatre makers in both official languages from across the nation.
