I believe passionately in the importance of bringing theatre to young people. The impact of this type of programming had a profound effect on my own life, and each year I look for the opportunity to give back. This year I was able to return to the Richmond Gateway Theatre and their Academy.
The Gateway Academy’s Main Stage Musical Theatre Camp offers 8-13 year olds the opportunity to perform a fully-staged musical on Gateway Theatre Main Stage in a new musicals commissioned from a leading local playwright. Over Four weeks of rehearsal, the young artists learn acting, dancing, vocals skills and singing with
leading working professionals.

Welcome to GEARS, the “Gateway Exploration, Adventure, and Research Scientists” hub – a place where innovation, experimentation and scientific phenomenon thrive. When a catastrophic event puts their life’s work in danger, our scientists need to put their heads together to preserve it, setting their sights on Mars. Will the scientists build a rocket ship in time? How do the other planets feel about humans landing on Mars? Is there anything GEARS can learn from their mistakes on earth and live sustainably on a new planet? Infused with creative input from the cast, this zany musical is an exploration in space, growing up and being a kid.
